Why home care?

If you or your loved one qualifies for HSE Home Support Services, they are entitled to certain support with everyday living activities.  

These services are available to people aged 65 or over who might need a little support to continue living at home. 

The HSE’s Home Support Services are individualised packages of community-based supports aimed at helping older people to remain living in their home for as long as possible. 
 
Typical supports provided include: 
 

• Assistance getting in and out of bed 

• Assistance dressing and undressing 

• Personal care 

• Assistance with mobility 

• Medication reminders 

 
Home Support Services are funded by the HSE and can be delivered free of charge to you by approved providers such as Dovida. There is no means test or income assessment.

Yes, many people choose to combine both types of care to create a more comprehensive support plan. Privately funded care can fill in the gaps when HSE services don’t cover the all that you would like.

Private home care means that you pay for the services yourself. The benefits of this mean that your care can start immediately, and you have complete flexibility to choose the services and caregivers you want to use. Tax relief of up to 40% on the cost of private home care is available in the Republic of Ireland. HSE Home Support Services provide funded support based on your eligibility criteria, and it can take some time to put in place.
