‘I’ve always believed it’s so important to live life to the fullest’ – Laura’s story

Living with cerebral palsy has never stopped Laura Kiersey from pursuing her ambitions.
She has earned both a degree in public health and a master’s in marketing, travelled extensively, and embraced opportunities many people only dream about, from competing in the Waterford Rose of Tralee selection to skiing in Austria.
Today, with the support of Dovida Caregivers, Laura continues to live independently at home while maintaining the freedom to make her own choices and enjoy life on her terms.
“I’ve always believed it’s so important to live life to the fullest, despite the challenges that can come with a disability. Dovida has helped me overcome those challenges,” she says.
When Laura was a child, her mum provided her personal care full-time, but as she grew up, it became more important for her to receive support from people other than family members.
“As I’ve gotten older, having professional support has allowed me to become more independent and less reliant on family members. It gives me a sense of independence and control over my life. Having that support allows me to make my own decisions and focus on the things that are important to me.”
Taking care of the essentials
Each day begins with support from her Caregiver, helping her with personal care, breakfast, and getting ready for the day ahead.
Having consistent support means Laura can focus her energy on work, hobbies, and travelling. She also enjoys the companionship and feels it’s important to acknowledge the role of everyone who has supported her throughout her life.
“I have a very good relationship with all my Caregivers; each of them has played a very important role in my life over the years,” she says.
Laura’s Caregivers provide more than just support in the home, they also help her to stay connected to the wider world and indulge her passions for travelling and music.
Living life her way
Last year, a Dovida Caregiver accompanied Laura on a memorable trip to Amsterdam.
With the support of her Caregiver, she travelled to the Dutch capital for five days, enjoying everything from sightseeing and dining out to attending a concert.
“We had a great time,” says Laura. “We visited tourist attractions, went out for food and drinks, and enjoyed a concert together. I am very grateful to her for that experience, and I think she enjoyed it too!”
The trip stands out as a reminder of what can be achieved with the right support in place.
“Knowing there was someone there to help whenever I needed it allowed me to relax and enjoy the experience,” she says. “It gave me the confidence and freedom to travel without having to rely on family members.”
Laura now looks forward to future trips. With the support of Dovida Caregivers, she is travelling to Belfast to see Calvin Harris and will also be taking in Electric Picnic with her mum.
Whether she’s travelling to attend concerts, planning her next adventure, or simply enjoying the independence that comes with living at home, Laura is determined to make the most of every opportunity.
“Living at home promotes my independence and gives me autonomy over my life and decision making,” she says. “It also gives me the freedom to travel when and where I want with the comfort of knowing that a Caregiver is there to help when I need it.”
