How to help lonely older adults

Social isolation and loneliness are important, but often neglected, social determinants of health across all ages, including for older people.

Social interaction and companionship are crucial to maintaining good mental health, and helping to prevent cognitive decline. In some countries, one in three older people feel lonely. While we all feel lonely from time to time, loneliness is also associated with increased risk of mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, low-self esteem, sleep problems and dementia.

What can I do if I’m concerned?

If you’re concerned about a family member, loved on or neighbour there are lots of things you can do to help. Caregiving is a great way to bring a spark to an older adult’s day, while phoning or calling in to someone for a chat can make a world of difference too.

How can I help somebody?

  • Conversation – drop in or stop to talk to an older person you know on the street.
  • Practial – Offer to help with tasks such as shopping, posting letters, picking up prescriptions or dog walking. You could offer to take them to an appointment or place they enjoy going.
  • Help with the house – Older people can sometimes struggle to tackle tasks that used to be simple. Offering to help with tasks such as taking out the rubbish, changing light bulbs, putting up pictures can be greatly appreciated.
  • Share a meal – Offer to cook or bring over something to eat. It’s practical but is also a great way to share time with an older person.
  • Become a caregiver- Dovida Caregivers provide companionship to older adults across Ireland. So whether you would like to care for older adults, or maybe you’re somebody who’s loved one needs just a little bit of extra company, we can help.
