Enjoyment at the forefront of activity

At times, preparing and conducting activities with people who have dementia can be challenging. but it’s so important to remember that enjoyment of any activity doesn’t require memory.

“A person with dementia may enjoy an outing, even though they won’t remember where they’ve been. What is important is that the moment is enjoyed.”

Why consider enjoyment as being most important?

It’s so important to remember that enjoyment of any activity doesn’t require memory. People living with dementia may have differing levels of ability and functioning, but they can still enjoy whatever activity you can do with them.

“Activities provide a structure for the daily lives of people with dementia, but they may need help organising their days.”

The importance of activities

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland notes on its website: “Activities provide a structure for the daily lives of people with dementia, but they may need help organising their days. Activities enable them to retain their life skills and learn some new ones. Exercises done with another person in the home or with others provide opportunities for social interaction.” So, enjoyment should be at the forefront of activity plans. Pay special attention to how a person reacts to an activity, and modify future activities accordingly.
