Celebrating Inclusion on International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025

This year the United Nation’s theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities is supporting inclusion to make our community better for everyone.

Today, Dr Kathy McLoughlin, Dovida’s Disability Service General Manager, shares her thoughts on what inclusion means and how it relates to homecare.

“Ultimately, everybody should be able to live life on their own terms, with dignity, independence, and choice.”

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a timely reminder of the importance of inclusion in society and why we must remove barriers that make inclusion more challenging for some.

Ultimately, everybody should be able to live life on their own terms, with dignity, independence, and choice.

What inclusion means

  • Equal opportunities – People with disabilities deserve the same chances as everyone else.
  • Accessible healthcare and education – No one should face barriers to essential services.
  • Participation in all aspects of life – Inclusion means being part of the community in every way.
  • Removing barriers – From physical spaces to social attitudes, barriers must be dismantled.

What you can do to help

This year’s theme reminds us that inclusion is the responsibility of everyone in society.

  • Listen to the voices of people with disabilities.
  • Partner with organisations, families and communities to break down barriers.

On International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025, let’s celebrate inclusion and recommit to building communities where everyone can take part.
