Activities for people living with dementia | Memory Games

Activities that encourage brain stimulation are a wonderful idea for people living with dementia.

What can I do?

You can do them together, helping the game progress if it reaches a roadblock. Remember to congratulate any wins by the other person, especially if they’ve been struggling with some answers. The below are a few examples of memory games that can help stimulate brain activity:

  • Scrabble
  • Card games
  • Crosswords
  • Basic memory games likes card matching

Another good verbal memory game is ‘I went shopping’ – you start by saying “I went shopping and I bought milk”, then the other personrepeats that and adds one more item: “I went shopping and I bought milk and bread.” The game keeps going back and forth with a longer and longer shopping list, until one of you can’t remember the full list! Then it can start again. Sometimes a memory game can be swapped for looking at a family photo album – see what stories the client can tell you, and who they can remember the names of, when prompted.
