Looking after your brain health in retirement

While everyone is entitled to a well-deserved break after a lifetime of hard work, a passive lifestyle in retirement is increasingly seen as a high-risk factor for cognitive decline.

How does a passive lifestyle lead to cognitive decline?

A healthy brain needs a challenge. When we spend large amounts of time passively scrolling on our phones or watching television, our brains aren’t being challenged, and that’s where cognitive decline can set in.

The good news is, small changes can make a huge difference. Simple activities like reading, doing puzzles, playing or taking up an instrument, and starting a new hobby can all help towards improving cognitive health.

How can I look after myself better?

The best way to achieve these benefits is to start with one small change, like a daily walk. After a while, add another small change.

Here are some things you can do to look after yourself as best as you can in retirement.

  • Keep your brain active every day.
  • Stay curious and involved – commit to lifelong learning.
  • Read, write, solve crosswords or other puzzles.
  • Attend lectures and plays.
  • Enrol in courses.
  • Play games such as Bridge and chess.
  • Stay physically active.
  • Try memory exercises.
