Caring for someone with Arthritis
Arthritis affects over 900,000 people in Ireland.
While there are over 100 different types of Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, or “wear and tear” Arthritis is the most common type and accounts for nearly half the 900,000 figure. Osteoarthritis develops gradually and affects a number of joints, appearing more in females than males. While Osteoarthritis is the most common type, all types cause pain, stiffness and joint inflammation. The person with arthritis can find it difficult to move around or perform daily activities.
How to care for someone with arthritis
- Empathy: A person with Arthritis can sometimes feel discouraged by what they are no longer able to do and so, It’s important to remind the person about what they can do, listen to them and take their concerns on board.
- Movement and Exercise: Encourage movement as even small amounts can help improve symptoms. Consult a healthcare professional before starting any exercise routine.
- Medication Management: You can help your loved one follow a treatment plan a healthcare professional has set out. Enourage them with medication reminders.
- Document Symptoms: Keeping track of when and where pain occurs can give valuable insights to healthcare professionals and help them to identify patterns.
- Diet: There is no magic food, or set diet but eating a balanced, healthy diet can make a difference to symptoms.
