The effects of loneliness are far-reaching. Research shows that isolation and loneliness can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, anxiety, depression, and dementia. People experiencing loneliness are also more likely to skip meals more frequently, which can affect overall health and . 

When we’re connected to others, we feel validated and experience a sense of belonging, it’s this social connection that helps to keep our brains stimulated and, importantly, assist in preventing cognitive decline. Changes in mobility, memory, or sensory abilities may lead to gradually distancing from social circles, which can contribute to loneliness, depression, and other physical health issues. 

A not insignificant challenge of loneliness is that, when we feel lonely, it’s often more difficult to reach out and be sociable than when we don’t – even though reaching out is a great help.
