There is a growing body of research showing massage therapy can have wonderful effects on people with dementia. Soaking feet in a basin of warm water, hand and foot massages can be especially helpful in reducing anxiety and agitation in people with dementia. The use of aromatherapy oils and scents must be with caution, as some can interact with medications. Only massage hands and feet with consent.
Hand and foot massages are considered ‘boundary-safe’ and can help people with dementia by:
- Inducing deep relaxation • Alleviating anxiety
- Easing pain and physical discomfort • Promoting sleep
- Communicating support and comfort.
